Tiger Maple Farm Table

Stephen Staples chose the most select grade of tiger maple available in this area to craft this handsome farm table. While most wood planing is done along the wood’s grain, Staples hand-planed this piece across the grain to add to the wood’s unique texture. Staples then applied a specialized, deep-penetrating finishing process that intensifies the tiger-eye gleam and lasts for decades.

Like all wood, this Tiger maple expands and contracts with seasonal changes in humidity, so special care had to be taken in the construction of the table. To attach the breadboard ends to the table surface, Staples developed a custom hidden joinery method that creates a strong joint and prevents cracking. And while some table makers secure the tabletop to the apron by either screwing it in place from the bottom, nailing it from the top, or both, our notched method is both strong and allows the top to move with the seasons. Staples also applies a finish to the bottom of the table. This protects the wood from an uneven absorption of humidity and prevents the surface from “cupping”.

Based on the delicate upsweep of early Windsor chair leg patterns, Stephen Staples designed the pattern for these strong and elegant hand-turned legs years ago. The legs are turned from solid tiger maple, and are fastened with inset 3/8“ bolts to hard wood blocks notched into the table apron. The legs can be removed and attached easily, and are convenient to today’s more mobile lifestyles.

Kitchen Center Island

Stephen Staples’ unique Kitchen Center Island was originally a workbench reclaimed from the barn of an old New England homestead.  Staples added a pair of distinctive knee braces and finished the top from reclaimed antique pine. An overhang on the back side allows enough leg room for two people to pull up a stool for a quick lunch or to do homework.  This piece was popular with many of our clients, so Staples decided to record the measurements and add the design to the Staples product line.

Staples later added a recycle / trash bin and a large drawer to the original Center Island design.  The top measures 66” long x 33” deep, and the height is 36".  There is now a 9" overhang the full length of the back making it comfortable to pull up three stools for a breakfast or lunch counter.  The top and drawer fronts are made with reclaimed antique pine.

A must in every kitchen, our Kitchen Center Island becomes the focal point of the room as well as the gathering center for all projects large and small.

Sideboard

The Sideboard is a wonderful compliment to a Farm Table in the dining room, or as a handsome stand-alone piece in a foyer.  With storage behind the doors and two spacious dovetailed drawers to keep linens, silver, etc., this Sideboard is an authentic, decorative, utilitarian piece.  The top and drawer fronts are made from reclaimed antique pine.  The case on this Sideboard is hand-painted black over red and rubbed down for a subtle charm. This wonderful piece is reminiscent of those crafted at the turn of the 19th century.

Stone Coffee Table

Stephen Staples discovered this large textured blue stone and decided it would make a great coffee table top.  The rustic aprons and legs are made from reclaimed antique pine barn beams, and make this coffee table a one-of-a-kind treasure.
