Staples Cabinet Makers’ Creations Are Preserving History

One-of-a-kind farm tables, tavern tables, cupboards, center islands, and  furniture art are made using old growth lumber reclaimed from the floors, lofts and attics of New England barns, mills and homesteads in New England, preserving forever these fragments of history.

PLAINVILLE, MA (February 9, 2006) – Old growth lumber provides an incomparable medium for master craftsmen and artisans. The tight grain found in old growth lumber produces a dense, strong and beautiful wood. Today, however, much of the old growth lumber in the United States is protected, making it difficult, and in many cases impossible, to obtain this wood commercially.

Master craftsman and furniture maker, Stephen Staples of Staples Cabinet Makers has found a solution that allows him to use old growth lumber to craft his unique tables and furniture art and still allow for the protection of old growth forests. Staples finds old growth wood from the barns, mills and homes throughout New England that are being razed for newer land development. Staples reclaims this rare and historic wood and gives it new life in each one-of-a-kind table or piece of furniture that he builds.

“Time is the best craftsman,” says Staples as he hand selects from a newly arrived stock of rare old growth chestnut he reclaimed. “You can’t find this kind of grain, color or patina from newer wood. The weight and the strength of each plank is impossible to find commercially.”

Stephen and his wife Christine Staples opened Staples Cabinet Makers more than 30 years ago as a small antique furniture refinishing studio. Today, they produce some of the most sought after tables, and furniture art in the country.
