SEWING CART CENTER ISLAND

We cleaned out an old building in Bellingham, Massachusetts.  Buried in the middle was this sewing cart.  It took many trips over the course of a year to clean out the building.  Every time I left this building, this cart was a little more visible.  I feared somehow that it would "walk away".  Finally it was completely uncovered and the owner had to decide if any family members might want it.  Well, money talks and on the truck it went.  Many of the most interesting pieces I come across never make it to our showroom.  This piece was no exception.  Our client requested a thick top that would extend so that it could be used as an eating area as well as a kitchen island.

This piece originally ran on a track.  The words on the side read "Sewing Room".  I'm sure it had a designated path through a factory at the turn of the century.  We used an old fan belt material to turn the harshness of a steel grove in the wheels to a rubber soft, non-marking wheel.  I am thrilled when a piece that was once used and abused in a harsh industrial atmosphere, can now receive a new life of admiration and care.
